Meet The Founder

Hi, I'm Melanie Winter, the artist and maker behind Marahuyo Spirit, a small, handmade art shop based in California's Central Valley 🌤️.

Marahuyo Spirit was born during a transition period in my life. One of those crossroads moments where you're not totally sure what's next, but you know something needs to change. I had just recently moved back home with my titas (aunts), titos (uncles), and cousins. All of us together in one home, like a big, loud, supportive community. A friend suggested I sell my art at a small local event. She'd seen me make art before, so to her, it made total sense. I was also looking for work at the time, so even though I had no idea what I would make (of if anyone would buy it), I decided to try.

I've always wanted to be an artist, but for a long time it never felt like a realistic option. I went to school for software engineering and culinary arts, and i've worked all kinds of jobs in all sorts fields over the years, but none of them ever felt quite right. When I finally had the time and space to explore something for myself, I figured I might as well give art a chance. that choice is what eventually became Marahuyo Spirit.

What "Marahuyo" means

Marahuyo is a Filipino word that captures that moment when you pause and think, "Wow... this is good. Life is good.". It can be big or small. Friends and family singing you happy birthday, that flutter in your stomach on a roller coaster, eating amazing food, or laughing so hard everything else disappears.

That feeling of joy, nostalgia, and presence is what inspired my artwork. I wants my art to give you a moment to slow down and feel a little marahuyo. Furthermore, I'd love for my pieces to be something that go with you through life, collecting more of those moments along the way.

My art style

My style is honestly... whatever I'm obsessed with at the moment 😅. Think of it like a sari-sari store (Filipino convenience store), loud, colorful, playful, and inviting. I love vibrant colors, cute characters, and expressive designs, especially food-inspired art. Food is comforting and nostalgic, which is probably why is shows up so often in my work.

I'm Filipino American (if you couldn't tell), and that's a huge part of my life and art. Karaoke, Filipino food and snacks, chismis (the Filipino art of gossiping), and everyday cultural moments all find their way into my designs. Sometimes obviously, sometimes quietly.

Why everything is handmade

Marahuyo Spirit is intentionally small-batch and handmade. Every sticker and decal is designed, printed, cut, and laminated by me. Making things by hand helps calm my constantly busy brain. It gives the endless train of ideas somewhere to go.

Because everything is handmade, each piece has its own little variations, which I love. It's a reminder that it came from a real person, not a factory.

Where Marahuyo Spirit is headed

Right now, Marahuyo Spirit is growing slowly and intentionally as an artist-owned small business. Marahuyo Spirit is changing and will continue to expand into new designs, collections, and creative projects over time.

Whether you're just browsing, supporting a small business, or just curious... i'm really glad you're here 💛
